Hybrid barley: Methods of development and potential usage
P. H. Hoskins
Abstract
The purpose of developing hybrid barley varieties is to obtain a 30% yield advantage over the present self-pollinated, commercial varieties. The difference in breeding techniques for self-pollinated and hybrid barley is explained. Present problems in research for developing the proper genetic tools to produce a commercial hybrid variety are covered. The potentialities of future, commercial, hybrid barley varieties in respect to yield, malting quality, and competition with other grain crops are emphasized.
