Recent developments in malting barley research in Canada
W. W. Sisler
Abstract
Barley research in Canada is conducted by the Canada Department of Agriculture and the Universities, with about 75 percent of the total effort devoted to improving the agronomic performance and quality characteristics of malting varieties. A number of promising new selections are now in the final stages of testing. Pilot-scale quality evaluation of potential new varieties has been reorganized and expanded. The malting and brewing industries, through the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute, coordinate this program and also provide grants in support of barley research at the universities. Intensive research work must be continued if future malting barley varieties are to compete with improved feed grain crops now being developed.
