Abstract
The history of the whirlpool tank is described. A typical whirlpool tank is described and illustrated and recent literature on Whirlpool installations and the mathematics of whirlpools is cited. A simplified explanation of the forces acting on the liquid and solids in suspension in wort tanks is offered, together with comments on the possible performance of modified tanks. The use of the principle as a possible hop separator, the disposal of the by product, and the use of additives to assist in the formation of a good break are also discussed.
