Ozone, the Add-nothing Sterilant

Tenney, R.I.

Abstract
Ozone, the most powerful oxidizing agent readily available to man, is a wide spectrum disinfectant, killing more rapidly than chlorine and irradicating even virus. It literally "burns out" such pollutants as cyanides, detergents, fermentation residues, phenols, and other organic debris to reduce the BOD of waste waters or air streams. Yet, ozone leaves neither taste, nor odor, nor toxic residue. Practical concentrations and applications are described for treating air in sensitive brewery areas, for gaining absolute sterility in water at critical points, and for treatment of tertiary or special effluents. Due to its instability, ozone is most economically generated as need d at the point of use. A general discussion of production methods and equipment is included.
