Abstract
The treatment of liquid effluents and solids by-products from a brewery are discussed. Liquid effluents do not offer any appreciable recovery values in contrast to some of the solid wastes. Spent grains, hops, yeast and trub are dewatered and then mixed to provide cattle feed but the effluent from this treatment is relatively strong and methods of handling it are described. It could be economic to dewater the trub separately from the other wastes in order to recover the wort it contains and ways of doing this are considered. The treatment of spent filter aids and powdered carbon using two alternate designs of (patented) dewatering filters is described in detail.
