Abstract
Recently published methods for the routine, rapid detection of microorganisms are reviewed and the problems involved in their use for routine microbiological control of filtration and pasteurisation are discussed. The procedure proposed involves membrane filtration of the sample, incubation of the membrane with carbon 14 labelled culture medium and scintillation counting. The concepts of critical activity and detection threshold are discussed. Results obtained with yeasts of the Saccharomyces genus, as well as with some yeasts of the Candida and Hansenula genera are given.
