Abstract
To minimise electrical consumption, studies have been made of the relationship between floor loading, process time and horse power to determine the optimum air flow conditions for new maltings using vessels between 200 and 300 t capacity. Practical experience with heat exchangers of different designs and materials and the full automation of kilning procedures have shown savings of between 30 and 40%. The use of heat pipes is being investigated as is the use of gas turbines, but these are not yet commercially viable.
