Abstract
The Institute of Brewing was founded originally in 1886 to promote research in brewing and associated industries and to establish technical and scientific status and qualifications for the industry. The history and current activities of the Institute are surveyed under the following headings: world environment in 1886, the Laboratory Club, early days, broad base of membership, analysis in brewing, research awareness, Journal of the Institute, education and examinations, technical committees, Institute headquarters, international activities including relationship with the MBAA.
