Modernization of the industrial relations process in a
Caribbean brewery.
Francis, B.R.
Abstract
This paper describes the main characteristics of the Industrial Relations
conditions at Desnoes and Geddes Limited prior to 1987. It examines briefly the impact of the growth of the organization on
these, and outlines a major training programme utilized to effect the modernization of the existing Industrial Relations process. The paper argues that a "paternalistic style of management" has to give way to a more modern approach if the organization is to continue on its successful trend. An indication of the main format and early results of the training effected for such a transition are also presented. The conclusion argues that the first few steps in the modernization process have been successful, and indicative that change and new approaches can be effected without significant disruption in Industrial Relations conditions.
