Abstract
Environmental problems and the legislation and other actions taken by the Venezuelan government to deal with them are briefly described. The local brewing and brewery supply industries have also acted. For instance, 61% of the fibre used by the paper and cardboard industry is obtained by recycling, as is 78% of the aluminium used in beverage cans. The Cerveceria de Oriente, one of the four breweries operated by the Polar company, manufactures a high grade compost from effluent treatment sludge and spent kieselguhr. Another brewery, not named by the author, is said to be developing a process to produce industrial ethanol from fermented brewery wastes.
