Abstract
The environmental problems facing the South African brewing industry include the need to reduce the suspended solids and organic wastes content of liquid effluent, and therefore to install appropriate treatment facilities, recurrent water shortages and the consequent need to reduce consumption and increase recovery/recycling, and the need to reduce air pollution from maltings. The large scale use of refillable containers means that packaging waste is less of a problem.
