Regulatory Issues With Regard to Powdery Mildew Control

Abstract
When hop powdery mildew was discovered in the Yakima Valley during 1997, no fungicides were registered for its control on hops in - U.S. Quick action by the hop industry, Washington State Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, and Dow AgroSciences allowed the approval of Rubigan@ (fenarimol) just 20 days after discovery of the disease. This preventative fungicide helped to protect the majority of the 1997 crop from serious damage. Its approval was renewed in 1998, along with two additional products and the implementation of new cultural practices to manage the disease. During 1998, efficacy testing of 20 compounds and residue studies for three additional fungicides are underway. The U.S. Hop Industry Plant Protection Committee has coordinated its efforts with hop researchers and chemical companies in Germany and the United Kingdom, to seek rapid, concurrent registration of priority products in three countries. By harmonizing U.S. efforts with other hop producing countries in the world, we will benefit from their experience previous testing of these compounds, as well as insuring equivalent residue standards to enhance international trade in hops.

Cuando se descubrio el moho blanco polvoriento en el valle de Yakima en 1997, no habia fungicidas registrados para su control en lupulo. Accion rapida por parte de la industria de] lupulo, el departamento de agricultura del gobierno, la agencia de proteccion ambiental, y DowElanco pennitieron la aprobacion de Rubigan solo 20 dias despues de que supieramos de la enfermedad. Este fungicida preventivo fue instrumental en proteger a la mayor parte del lupulo de dano severo. Su aprobacion fue renovada en 1998, as� como de otros dos productos adicionales y la implernentacion de practicas culturales nuevas para el control de la plaga. Dutante 1998 las pruevas de eficacia de 20 compuestos, y estudios de residuos de tres fungicidas adicionales estan en camino.
