Abstract
Some of the basic forces acting upon the filter cake and the mechanics of building up a filter cake are illustrated. The basic requirements for a single pass filtration are explored, and it is shown that it is not really equipment-dependent, but does demand certain capabilities and minimum requirements, which the equipment must satisfy.
Explanation is provided of how the horizontal leaf filter expands possibilities available to the user in choosing how to perform and end the filtration. A possible scenario is presented on how to design a filtration plant and perform a filtration and to bring the volume of the unfiltered heel down to lower the losses related to the filter cellar. Technical advantages and an explanation of the tenets of horizontal leaf filtration are reviewed, and the latest commercial-scale implementation of this technology in North America is discussed.

Algunas de las fuerzas b�sicas que act�an sobre la costra del filtro y la mec�nica de la formaci�n de la costra del filtro son ilustradas. Se exploran los requisitos b�sicos del proceso de filtraci�n de una solo paso y se muestra que no depende �nicamente del equipo, sino que demanda ciertas capacidades y requisitos m�nimos que el equipo debe satisfacer.
Se ofrece una explicaci�n de como el filtro de hoja horizontal expande las posibilidades disponibles al usuario para escoger el corno realizar y terminar la filtraci�n. Se presenta un posible escenario de como dise�ar una planta de filtraci�n y llevar a cabo una filtraci�n, as� como disminuir el volumen de residuos no filtrados para reducir las p�rdidas relacionadas al s�tano del filtro. Se revisan las ventajas t�cnicas y una explicaci�n de los principios de la filtraci�n de hoja horizontal y se discute la �ltima implementaci�n a escala comercial de esta tecnolog�a en Norte Am�rica.
