Genetically Modified Barley and the Brewing Industry

Abstract
All crops used in the production of beer, with the exception of hops, can be genetically modified (GM). While barley is being genetically modified for research purposes and will likely be commercialized in the near future, other GM crops such as corn and rice are in commercial production. This review addresses the impact of GM barley and other GM crops on the brewing industry. Specific topics include: (i) the history and status of plant genetic engineering technologies with emphasis on barley and other cereals, (ii) GM crops and traits currently in production and those that are being developed for future commercialization, (iii) concerns, risks, and benefits of GM crops including barley and crops used as brewing ingredients, and (iv) methods for detection of GM ingredients.

S�ntesis
Todas las cosechas usadas en la producci�n de la cerveza, con la excepci�n del l�pulo, pueden ser modificadas gen�ticamente (GM). Mientras que la cebada esta siendo modificada gen�ticamente, con prop�sitos de investigaci�n y probablemente ser� comercializada en un futuro cercano, otras cosechas modificadas gen�ticamente tales como el ma�z y el arroz est�n en producci�n comercial. Este documento hace referencia al impacto de la cebada modificada gen�ticamente y de otras cosechas modificadas gen�ticamente en la industria cervecera. T�picos espec�ficos incluyen: (i) la historia y condicion de tecnolog�as de ingenieria genetica de plantas con �nfasis en la cebada y otros cereales, (ii) cosechas modificadas gen�ticamente y caracter�sticas actualmente en produccion asi como aquellas que se estan desarrollando comercializar en le futuro, (iii) riesgos, beneficios, y preguntas acerca de de las cosechas modificadas geneticamente incluyendo la cebada y cosechas usadas como ingredients de cerveza , y (iv) metodos para la detecci�n de ingredients modificados genticamente.
