Abstract
Disc separators have been used in breweries for clarification of beer prior to filtration for about a hundred years now. The more modern type of these centrifuges, automatically discharging clarifiers, have been in use for over 60 years. However, the installation of these machines in their early years affected beer quality in a bad way, with issues such as oxygen pickup, inconsistent discharge, product heating, and hygiene. Modern brewery separators are designed to effectively clarify beer without picking up oxygen, to be efficiently cleaned without disassembly, to discharge yeast with a maximized yield of clarified beer, and to be reliable with low-maintenance operation.
