Abstract
In fall 2019, I had the pleasure of visiting Stift
Engelszell (Engelszell Abbey) in Engelhartszell, Austria. Alongside the likes
of Chimay and Westvleteren, Stift Engelszell in one of 14 Trappist abbeys
producing beer as members of the International Trappist Association. At the
helm of Engelszell’s beer program is the enthusiastic and contemporary
brewmaster Michael Hehenberger. We chatted about his brewing experience, his
work at the monastery, and the pulse of the industry in Austria.
