Abstract
There can be few brewers who have not made, or beer drinkers who have not drunk, a beer made with the Fuggle hop or one of its many descendants. Surprisingly, although the variety has been around for some 150 years, since it first appeared in a flower garden in Kent, England, it is only recently that some important and perhaps surprising facts about its origins, both genetically and historically, have been uncovered. Here is the story of the Fuggle hop’s discoverers, its spread across the globe, its contribution to daughter varieties around the world, and its own parentage.
