Abstract
With the advent of flavored malt beverages and the many seltzer products being produced, this article will bring to light the hidden hazards of the flavorings we are all using to produce these popular products—flammable liquids. This article will help to identify what a flammable liquid is, what regulatory agencies govern these materials, what hazards these materials present in our breweries, and methods to mitigate these hazards. Methods to systematically assess these risk factors will be presented and allow the brewery owner to determine appropriate controls to mitigate the fire risks to an acceptable level. The use of flammable liquids requires documentation of assessment, mitigation, procedures, and training for their use.
